Ascension Senior Center

The Ascension Senior Center was a joint project with the the Ascension Cathedral, Alameda Board of Education, Oakland Adult Education, Pleasant Valley Adult School, Bay Area Community Services and was established in February 1979. Trained volunteers and funds for supplies were all provided for the purpose of offering a no fee, stimulating environment to older adults to develop areas of interest, increase social involvement, and learn new skills. The primary objective was to encourage adults to continue living independently and to reduce any isolation and loneliness. The Center met weekly and included a full day of activities, lunch, special programs, and field trips. The Senior Center did evolve into an annual senior camp that was affiliated Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco. Despina Bogdanos was the Senior Center’s long time Director and Leader.
